HCG Drops Diet Side Effects: Dangerous Shots For Weight Loss

A new diet fad sweeping the nation involves receiving injections of a substance commonly referred to as HCG. Supposedly, it stops you from feeling hungry and is believed to redistribute fat. Although it is considered revolutionary, however, the theory was actually developed way back in the 1950s.

Believe it or not, this treatment was not created to help people lose weight. HCG (human chorionic gonadotropin) is a hormone used to treat infertility!

And here’s the kicker, the FDA has approved it for that purpose, but not to promote weight loss. Do you know what that means? It means that the drug has not been proven to help people lose weight. In fact, there was a study in 1995 which found that HCG actually did NOT aid in weight loss.

But wait, it gets worse!

Ordinarily, using substances which are advertised to help you lose weight when they really don’t will not do anything worse than waste your money. That is not the case with the HCG diet, though. There are side effects to the diet and injections— which range from mildly inconvenient to deadly. Here are some of the dangers you may be facing if you try to use this method of losing weight.

#1: You will not look like you lost weight if you are bloated!

It is somewhat ironic that you are trying to lose weight in order to become smaller, yet the method you use is making you look bigger, right? But the hormone HCG is frequently known to cause bloating. And if you think this is bad, wait until you hear the next possible side effect.

#2: Some people who are treated with HCG actually GAINED weight.

Yes, that’s right. Some women who have taken this hormone for its intended use have gained weight as a result. And anyone who is taking it for any other purpose, including trying to LOSE weight, is still vulnerable to the same possibility.

#3: How many headaches can you live with?

Headaches are one of the most common side effects of this diet. That is probably because they are not only caused by the hormone itself, but also the extreme hunger you will experience trying to lose weight following this regimen.

Did you know that it is brutally restricted to a mere 500 to 550 calories a day? That, in itself, can cause one of the most dangerous side effects. But, first, here are a few more reactions you should be aware of.

#4: Disfiguring rashes are not only unsightly, but also uncomfortable.

Rashes have been reported by many people following this diet program. These are not sparsely distributed over an area that can be lightly ignored, either. They are huge swathes of bumps that cause severe itching. They disappear within a day or two, once the hormone is no longer being ingested, but they return almost immediately, once the injections are resumed.

#5: Every shot may hurt.

Even people who don’t mind getting shots may find that the site of the injection remains painful afterward. Yes, the needles are tiny compared to what most shots require. But you will need to be injected every single day in order to reap full benefits of this weight loss method. So even if you choose a variety of places on your body to take the shots, this may only mean that you are experiencing pain in many different places of your body all at once.

Obviously, this is not an easy thing to live with. Even if you have a fairly high tolerance for pain, however, there are still more possible side effects which may make it difficult to function normally while on this diet.

#6: Your mental health may be affected.

The possibility of depression is increased by taking HCG, and this is not to be taken lightly. Depression is an extremely serious condition that could affect your relationships with family and friends, as well as have a seriously negative impact on many other aspects of your life, including your career.

#7: You may be incapacitated by dizziness.

HCG has been known to cause dizziness in some of the people who have taken the injections. Added to that, many people become dizzy when they haven’t eaten properly.

So, between the hormone and the diet, there is an increased risk for this symptom no matter how you look at it. And while this may not seem like a huge problem, it could certainly be dangerous if it occurred at the wrong time and place, such as while driving.

But there are other results of this diet which could be dangerous— regardless of time and place, so let’s look at them now.

#8: Taking these shots is like playing Russian Roulette.

It is possible to get HCG without a prescription and give yourself the injections every day. But doing so, without the supervision of a medical professional, will put you at increased risk for developing a blood clot that could prove fatal.

This is actually a possibility for any type of injection, but a fairly remote one. Many people, such as some diabetics, manage to inject themselves on a daily basis without any problems whatsoever. Because of this, those who choose to use HCG injections believe that there is no increased danger to them, either. But they are wrong. The hormone itself increases the risk of blood clots.

This is not a risk to take lightly. And there are more to come.

#9: Women who take HCG are particularly vulnerable to a condition that could kill them.

Even women who use HCG for the purpose it was intended, increased fertility, are susceptible to developing ovarian hyper-stimulation syndrome. The more often they take the hormone, the more likely the possibility that this potentially life-threatening disorder will occur.

Its symptoms may include shortness of breath, gastrointestinal problems and pelvic or abdominal pain. Other symptoms, though less painful, include swelling of the hands, legs and abdomen, as well as weight gain.

Yes, once again, HCG may actually cause you to gain weight instead of losing it. This means that you are taking your life into your hands only to result in the exact opposite of the goal you were trying to achieve. But it is not only women who are risking their lives with this dangerous diet. Men are equally vulnerable to the side effects we will discuss next.

#10: HCG alone will not allow you to lose weight, you must follow a diet that can kill you.

The body is not meant to survive on extremely low calorie diets, which is defined as any diet that is less than 800 calories a day. The 500 to 550 calories a day that the HGC diet requires is dangerous in many ways.

  • It can cause long term health disorders. The negative impact of crash diets like this one can linger for long after the diet is over, possibly for a life time. Eventually, your health may deteriorate to the point that it is fatal. And, as bad as that is, there is the even worse possibility that the diet could kill you even sooner.
  • It can cause an eating disorder, or make an existing one worse. A lot of people who try extreme diets like this one already have some type of eating disorder. In some cases, it is only a mild one, but this diet could make it significantly worse. If it is already a serious one, this diet could accelerate it to a dangerous, possibly deadly level. Even those who never had an eating disorder before in their lives could actually develop one just by spending several weeks on this diet.
  • The diet will turn your body against you. It is almost impossible to get the amount of protein your body needs when eating only 500 to 550 calories a day. There are many diets that require this for a few days as a kind of “detox”, but the HCG diet demands several weeks of this punishing dietary regimen. The problem here is that the body needs enough protein in order to survive. And if it is not getting that bare minimum from the diet it is being fed, it will go seeking more wherever it can find. That means it will turn to its own organs, if necessary, including the heart. Reaching that point could result in sudden death.

These are the factors that have been mentioned most often in association with the HCG diet. But there are other symptoms which are still considered possible, though more rare.

In women, these may include indigestion, nausea and vomiting, or decreased amount of urine. In boys, these have included acne or rapid increase in height. Some effects cease when HCG is no longer consumed, while others may linger afterward.

In any case, if any of the following conditions persist, it is recommended you consult with a medical professional.

  • Depression
  • Difficulty sleeping or concentrating
  • Headaches
  • Irritability
  • Tiredness
  • Severe stomach, pelvic or abdominal pain
  • Shortness of breath
  • Rapid weight gain

And it is suggested that you consult a medical professional immediately if any of the following occur at any time:

  • Pain in chest, groin or legs, particularly in the calves
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Sudden significant weakness or numbness in arms or legs
  • Tightness in chest
  • Slurred speech
  • Blurred vision
  • Sudden loss of coordination
